Community Spotlight: Lawrence Humane Society

Our furry friends bring so much love into our lives — and in return, we provide them with food and shelter. But what about the animals who have nowhere to turn? Enter the Lawrence Humane Society, our well-deserving Community Spotlight.

Humble Beginnings

It all started with just one small house on Indiana Street. Ms. Norma Campschrader founded what we now know as the Lawrence Humane Society out of her love of animals and dedication to making a difference. Beginning with just a few volunteer workers, the organization quickly outgrew itself. 

On March 26, 1951, the current location on East 19th Street was established, and has continued to grow ever since. For over 69 years, the Lawrence Humane Society has been providing animals with the food and shelter they deserve, along with providing families with their lifelong pets.

    The Lawrence Humane Society rescues several thousand homeless animals every year, and the staff offers their time and dedication to ensuring these animals find their forever homes. Operating out of a 20,000 square foot facility, they are committed to giving their animals the proper care and ultimately, a chance at a new life.

    Additionally, you may find an adoption special that suits you. The LHS offers several different incentives, including:

    • Silver Whiskers Program (Ages 55+)
    • Pets for Vets (Retired Veterans)
    • Working Cat Program (Rural Households)

    Regular adoption fees differ based on each individual animal’s needs, such as medical care, or extra time at the facility before they can be adopted. Included in the adoption fee, your pet will be spayed or neutered, vaccinated, microchips, a free vet visit to a participating local veterinary hospital, and more!

    Plus, if you know the type of animal companion you’re seeking (such as breed, size, or age), you can “Request a Pet.” LHS receives new animals every day, so you’ll be notified via email if one of them matches your criteria.

      If adopting a pet from LHS doesn’t match your lifestyle right now, you can volunteer your time to help care for the animals that are in need. Volunteers help out in all areas of the shelter, and further promote the mission of LHS that was established so many years ago.
